OpenSolaris is an operating system based on Sun Microsystem's solaris and is derived from Unix System V codebase. The most important thing is that it is open source OS.
Suppose you are a software or a web developer and you are using an OS whose each and every part you know then howeasy and clear your job becomes.
Suppose you want to have some new features in your OS which suites your workstyle better and you can introduce it.
You can have your own OS according to your requirements. This is all because of open source. SUN provides you the
source code of OpenSolaris which you can study and can add more features to it if you get permission from Sun's OpenSolaris developers. This is open for every human being over this earth.

OpenSolaris is not just an Operating System but also an online community consisting of developers who are backed-up up by paid engineers of SUN Microsystem who are there to create for creating a more robust experience in the computer world. SUN is also releasing OpenSolaris versions(incremented) in every 6 months. So there are no limitations for this operating system.
Moreover this community also designs Open Source applications for this OS which are not present in any other OS like ZFS file system. So making the world's work easier.

Sun has also brought OSUM (Open Source University Meetups) at grassroot levels so that every one can easily participate in this league.
